Dan Collins’s seminar this year, Lacan: The Middle Seminars, will continue a project to study Lacan’s Seminars 12, 13, 14, and 15. These seminars have received very little scholarly attention up to the present in French or English. Last year, we explored Seminars 12 and 13. This year, we’ll continue with Seminars 14 and 15, The Logic of Fantasy and The Psychoanalytic Act. The transitional period of the middle seminars falls between two major turning points in Lacan’s work, The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis, discussed in Seminar 11, and the discourse theory of Seminar 17. We’ll use these seminars to look both back and forward in Lacan’s career, and we’ll explore Lacan’s trajectory during this time.

Lacan Toronto Film Series
Lacan Toronto fifth film night, Wednesday, March 12,2014 in Toronto. The film: “The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology”, a 2012 British documentary film directed by Sophie Fiennes and written and presented by Slovene philosopher and psychoanalyst Slavoj Žižek. It is a sequel to Fiennes’s 2006 documentary “The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema”. Though the film follows the frameworks of its predecessor, this time the emphasis is more on ideology itself. Through psychoanalysis Zizek explores “the mechanisms that shape what we believe and how we behave”. Among the films that are explored are Full Metal Jacket, Taxi Driver, The Sound of Music, Titanic. The film was released in the United States by Zeitgeist Films November, 2013. (Wikipedia)

T.P.S. ExtensionProgram 2013-2014  – Reading Lacan
Course Leaders: Judith Hamilton, Claire Lunney, Clive Thomson
January 16, 23, 30, February 6, 13, 2014.
In this course, we will present and study together Lacan’s Seminar XVIII – On a Discourse that Would Not be a Semblance. This work elaborates on the Four Discourses of Seminar XVII and suggests that only the discourse of the unconscious does not rely on the signifier. It is on the side of repetition and jouissance, lalangue, and deals with the Real. As the discourse of the unconscious, it cannot be said directly but can be “written” and interpreted. This leads to Lacan’s elaboration of “There is no signifier of sexual difference in the unconscious”, and his proposal that “There is no sexual relation.” The faculty will act as guides who will orient the members of the group to the readings, elucidate and elaborate some of the concepts, and encourage discussion including the application of the concepts in clinical practice.
At the Toronto Psychoanalytic Society, 7:30-10:00. Fee: $200

September 29, 2012, noted Slovenian philosopher and Lacanian psychoanalyst Slavoj Zizek spoke in a panel at Nuit Blanche, at City Hall. he was part of a symposium of three noted philosophers looking at the issue of “Until the End of the World.” “Arthur Kroker, Brenda Longfellow and Slavoj Žižek consider the profound ecological and economic issues that confront the Planet.”

Zizek also spoke at the TIFF presentation of his new film The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology.
According to the TIFF website: “Depending on one’s view, the philosopher and academic superstar Slavoj Žižek is a genius, madman, contrarian, clown, sensationalist, radical leftist, scourge of liberals, or all the above. Director Sophie Fiennes reunites with the very funny provocateur Žižek for the sequel to their collaboration The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema. Žižek examines film clips, both famous and obscure, for their overt and hidden ideological implications, tracing their connections to current times, while Fiennes does a masterful job editing Žižek’s commentary into film scenes and placing him into clever recreations of famous film sets. Fiennes and Žižek (making his first visit to the Festival) engaged in an onstage discussion following this world premiere screening.”
